  • MATSURI (a project to establish the microalgae-based industry)

Chitose Laboratory Corp. (hereinafter, CHITOSE), a core company of CHITOSE Group, will collaborate as a technical supervisor for the algae-focused exhibition “Farm Area” within the Japan Pavilion at the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo. The exhibit is a part of the theme adopted by NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) under the “Green Innovation Fund Project” (hereinafter, GI Fund Project).

Algae Takes the Spotlight in the Japan Pavilion’s “Farm Area”
The Japan Pavilion consists of three areas connected under the common theme “Between Lives”: “Farm Area”, “Plant Area”, and “Factory Area”. The circular architecture is designed to create an image of various kinds of “circulation”, such as the circulation of ecosystems and resources, and visitors themselves are made aware that they are part of the great circulation of the Earth as they are connected with all other living beings.

Recognized for their tremendous potential in resolving social issues such as excessive dependence on limited fossil resources and food shortages, algae play a leading role in the “Farm Area” exhibit. Algae efficiently store solar energy through photosynthesis and produce a variety of organic substances. Not only can they be directly consumed as food or feed, but they can also be processed into raw materials for a variety of applications, including fuel, food, cosmetics, and chemical products. As a result, algae are attracting attention as a key factor in building a circular society.

About CHITOSE Algae-Related Business
Driven by its vision “to live in abundance beyond the next millennium using the ability of living things” and determination to promote the use of biotechnology in all industries, CHITOSE Group has been continuously focusing on developing algae solutions. In 2021, CHITOSE launched the “MATSURI” project, which aims to build an algae-based industry by collaborating with players from various sectors, regardless of their field or focus. To promote the widespread adoption of algae-derived products that would support people’s lives, CHITOSE is simultaneously working on expanding production capacity and developing diverse applications.

Photobioreactors

In its efforts to expand the scale of algae production, CHITOSE completed a 0.1-hectare facility in August 2018 and a 5-hectare facility, CHITOSE Carbon Capture Central (C4)*1, in April 2023. Currently, preparations are underway to open a 100-hectare facility*2. These facilities utilize CHITOSE proprietary flat-panel photobioreactors, which allow efficient algae production through the use of solar energy and minimal water resources. Algae cultivation using photobioreactors will be one of the main exhibits in the “Farm Area” of the Japan Pavilion. In addition to this, CHITOSE will also collaborate as a technical supervisor for other algae-related exhibits.

CHITOSE Carbon Capture Central (C4)

This exhibition is an exceptional opportunity to leverage the world-class technology and expertise that CHITOSE has cultivated over the years to promote the potential of algae and the bioeconomy on a global scale. Through its role at the “Farm Area” exhibition, CHITOSE aims to raise awareness about a sustainable future and contribute to the advancement of the algae industry.
