In commemoration of our 10th anniversary, we planted trees at 10 locations in Japan and overseas bases that are connected to CHITOSE. Brunei is located near the equator and is called the country of everlasting summer all year around. TABÉRUMO, a group company of CHITOSE, established a new plant in Brunei in 2019. This plant is producing spirulina by taking advantage of Brunei's climate. Looking ahead to the future, where the supply and demand balance of protein is expected to be disrupted, TABÉRUMO creates a new diet for the future of the Earth.
In the corner of the Brunei plant, in a sunny position and visible to visitors to the plant, we planted Garcinia gummi-gutta, which has become the new face of the Brunei plant.

Kawasaki City, the place where CHITOSE GROUP was founded. Kasugadai Park is located in Chitose area, Takatsu-ku, which is also the origin of the company name "CHITOSE", and is located between Kanagawa Science Park (KSP) and Nogawa Research Institute. We donated an Edohigan cherry tree to Kawasaki City in the hope that we will be able to feel the growth of the company and ourselves as the tree grows, and that the citizens who visit the park will be able to enjoy the seasonal flowers.
While many of us work remotely, this was the first time in a long time that we gathered together and took a commemorative photo around the cherry blossoms.

In April 2020, "Circular Bioeconomy Development" was established in the office of Society Academia Collaboration for Innovation (SACI) at Kyoto University, and our CEO, Dr. Fujita, took up a post as a specially-appointed professor.
In order to realize a circular economy, we are exploring ways to build and develop biotechnology research that captures the practical application of biotechnology in society. In addition, we are working together on research and development of biotechnologies (such as new enzymatic reactions, microbial exploration, etc.) that cannot be achieved by corporations alone, while utilizing the technological assets of the university.
In hope of the development of this endowed course, we planted Himeyuzuriha in front of the Graduate School of Agriculture Bldg. No.2 in the university.

This evergreen tree is distributed from the southern Tohoku region to Okinawa. The name of this tree comes from the meaning of "Yuzuriha," in which old leaves fall when young leaves appear in spring.
We chose this tree in the hope that our future with the university will grow and develop as the tree leaves will be handed down from generation to generation.

Settaya, where Mirai Compass is located, is known as a "City of fermentation and brewing" in Nagaoka City, and has a strong affinity with bio-production, which is why we planted the trees here.

It is a deciduous tree of the family Cercidiphyllaceae found in mountainous areas throughout Japan. In autumn, it gives off a sweet fragrance like cotton candy and turns yellow beautifully. Wishing for the further development of our collaboration with Nagaoka City, we chose this tree that can grow a sprout no matter how many times it is cut, like the phoenix which is the city's emblem.

At Cameron Highlands, as the forefront of CHITOSE Agriculture Initiative, producing a variety of crops such as "CHITOSE strawberries" and "CHITOSE vegetables." In order to change the agriculture in Southeast Asia with the power of the CHITOSE brand, we have been developing farmland, and our crops have become so popular that they now have their own fans. Based on the creation of "wholesome soil," which was born from the Japanese view of microorganisms, we aim to create a society where human beings can grow and eat "wholesome produce" and live in abundance for the next thousand years. With a view to inherit the goodness of Japan, we planted Japanese maple trees in the Cameron Highlands.
In the future, we plan to expand the scope of our activities in Malaysia to include education and tourism through agriculture.

The beginning of CHITOSE's activities in Sarawak was joint research with the Sarawak Biodiversity Center in 2013. We conducted research and development, including the collection of microalgae species, and succeeded in outdoor large-scale cultivation of algae in the tropics. We have built good relationships with local state governments and companies, and are continuing our research toward the commercial use of algae.
From 2020, we are working on a NEDO project to construct the world's largest microalgae cultivation demonstration facility and conduct long-term large-scale cultivation demonstration research with the aim of promoting the use of bio-jet fuel.
CHITOSE has set up the MATSURI project as a festival to develop a society based on algae. We will cooperate with players from various industries to establish the algae industry.

In Hokuto City, CHITOSE GROUP is promoting high-quality agricultural production that preserves the ecosystem of farmland, which it calls "CHITOSE Agriculture Initiative" while protecting the wholesome farmland and revitalizing agriculture which is the city's core industry. In the field of health care in Hokuto City, we would establish a data-based health promotion by utilizing CHITOSE GROUP's microbiota and data analysis technologies to prevent lifestyle-related diseases through the management of intestinal flora.
We plan to plant trees in Hokuto City, hoping for the further development of Hokuto City and CHITOSE.

With the international demand to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we are now under pressure to break away from a society dependent on the consumption of fossil resources that emit large amounts of CO2. However, many things that are indispensable to modern society, such as fuels and plastics, are made from fossil resources.
By manufacturing fuels and plastics from algae instead of fossil resources, we can reduce CO2 emissions. CHITOSE possesses the most advanced technology to produce algae on a large scale. We're also promoting MATSURI, the world's first business collaboration project to create an algae industry with a variety of companies. By 2025, we will build one of the world's largest algae production plants with a total area of 2,000 hectares and provide society with various algae-derived products that support our daily lives.

There are concerns that a food and protein crisis is coming due to the increase in the world population and changes in the dietary habits of emerging countries. The establishment of new food production methods is necessary for all people on the planet to live without hunger and malnutrition.
CHITOSE solves this problem by supplying "algae" which is rich in protein and other nutrients. Since algae can grow in a limited area with water, sun, CO2, and a few minerals, it is possible to supply protein in a sustainable way while fixing CO2. TABÉRUMO, our group company, has succeeded in commercializing Spirulina, a type of algae, which can be eaten raw and fresh. By "eating algae," we are creating the future of "food" in the world.

Recently, biopharmaceuticals have gained a significant presence in the pharmaceutical market due to their low side effects and high therapeutic efficacy. However, the high cost of manufacturing is an issue, as they are produced by culturing living cells. Innovation in the manufacturing process is essential to solve this problem and to spread gene therapy and regenerative medicine.
With our cell production and cultivation technologies, CHITOSE is working to innovate manufacturing processes with an eye to biopharmaceuticals, gene therapy, and regenerative medicine. As a representative example, the CHITOSE Supercell (CHO-MK cells) can produce large quantities of antibodies, which are biopharmaceuticals, contributing greatly to the reduction of antibody production costs. We are also developing cells for gene therapy, which is attracting attention as a new modality.

Using big data collected in Japan and overseas on the intestinal microbiota, food, lifestyle, and health condition, we are developing a system that can provide advice tailored to each individual from the perspective of the microbiome, which changes dynamically on a daily basis.
In collaboration with various research centers and local governments, we aim to demonstrate the utilization of this data and services and to build a system that will enable people to work on sustainably improving their health.

Nitrogen is one of the elements that make up living things. We take it into our bodies by eating crops that have absorbed the nitrogen contained in the soil and chemical fertilizers. However, the production of chemical fertilizers requires a lot of energy, leading to the increase of greenhouse gases. In addition, excess nitrogen left in the soil causes various problems in modern society, such as health damage. Therefore, we need to get rid of our dependence on chemical fertilizers as a source of nitrogen.
CHITOSE is developing technologies to convert nutrients which are disposed of unused, such as nitrogen contained in food waste, wastewater, and waste, into a form that reduces CO2 emissions and can be used effectively, using the power of microorganisms and other organisms.
By building a recycling-oriented eco-town that implements these technologies in society, we aim to realize an optimal nitrogen cycle.

The amount of sunlight that falls on the earth is significantly vast that it can cover the world's annual energy consumption in just one hour. Nevertheless, humanity has not yet been able to use it effectively.
Our lives are supported by excavation and utilization of the fossil resources that the earth has accumulated over a long period of time. However, in the process, a lot of CO2 is continuously released into the atmosphere. We are working on mass-producing algae and plants that can fix CO2 through photosynthesis and producing recyclable materials and products from these raw materials by using the power of microorganisms. Through these approaches, CHITOSE is aiming to build a solar-powered recycling society (Biologicalize the Earth).
